Pedro and Nina's Story
One afternoon we got a call from an animal shelter in Toronto about a little Papillon that had been brought in as a stray. He was of course confused and acting out with aggression. We were asked to come pick him up. So off we went to his rescue.
From there we did not know what to expect. They brought us out this beautiful little black and white Phalene. He seemed to know why we were there. He greeted us with kisses and tucked himself under our knees. What a pleasant surprise! She passed us the leash and off we went.
We spent the next few weeks getting to know one another. There was a bit of a setback, with a visit to the vet to get neutered, but that healed in no time. We discovered that he was quite the character. Our daughter named him Paedro. We could tell that he was very grateful to us. His trust with us grew and ours with him, but he would get very aggressive if we would try to collar him or pick him up, our control was limited. Even though it was very frustrating on both our parts, we could still see he was a wonderful little boy that was trying very hard.
With much appreciated help from Papillon Canada, we were put in touch with a trainer and an animal chiropractor. With their assistance we were able to collar him and adjust his body which was badly misaligned. We believe this explains why he was collar intolerant and didn't like to be picked up. We can only guess on his past history.
Immediately after his chiropractic treatment we noticed a big change in Paedro, he must be feeling a lot better. We put a leash on him and left it on, which greatly helped get control over him and reduce both our and Paedro's stress.
We enrolled him in level 1 obedience training and the little guy excelled. He learned very fast and was eager to please. Eventually with lots of love, patience and understanding on both parts we were able to not only connect and disconnect his leash, he also allowed us to pick him up without incident.
This wonderful little papillon has personality plus and is very smart. We have learned a great deal about rescue through Paedro and have found the experience very rewarding.
We have found him the perfect forever home with a loving family of four. He now lives in a large house with a huge backyard where he can feel safe, loved and will be pampered for the rest of his life.
We cannot begin to relate to you the joy, satisfaction and sense of accomplishment this rescue has given us.
Approximately a year later, a one year old female pap named Nina was
surrendered to us by an elderly couple who could not cope with her high
energy level. Nina is a little spit fire. She also went to live with
Paedro and now he has a little sister. They are happy pappy's in their
forever home.
